Taking Stock: A look at the Washington Capitals' prospect trade chips for the deadline
The Washington Capitals currently hold the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. In any other season, that would be a precarious position to find one's self in. This year, not so much. There's a clear line between the playoff teams and the ninth-ranked Columbus Blue Jackets, and it's been that way for some time now.
Barring a miracle run from the Blue Jackets coupled with an epic collapse on their part, the Capitals are all set for another run at the Stanley Cup.
While their performance this season doesn't inspire confidence in their ability to repeat their 2018 victory, they have the elite talent and the depth at forward and defence to flick the switch and go on another lengthy run.
Washington is right against the salary cap, but the team could strike a bigger money-in, money-out type of deal to give the team the sort of spark it needs to kickstart that run.
Here's an inventory of what the team's farm system has to offer to sellers ahead of the trade deadline.
