This past week on The Pipeline Show we got to know a lot more about a trio of players eligible for the 2019 NHL Draft, got the inside scoop on the OHL’s Sudbury Wolves and previewed the NCHC Conference playoffs in the NCAA.
CHL Insider: Branden Scott
With the CHL playoffs right around the corner, the Sudbury Wolves are in the pack of top teams in the Ontario Hockey League’s Eastern Conference. The Wolves are currently 4th but within spitting distance of the Niagara IceDogs and Oshawa Generals, the two clubs they are trying to chase down.
I spoke with the radio voice of the Wolves, Branden Scott, to get a sense of the team as the regular season draws to a close. Branden spoke about several individual players on the roster like leading scorer Adam Ruzicka, draft eligible Blake Murray and star rookie Quinton Byfield.
Scott shared his insight on the rest of the Eastern conference as well including the top seeded Ottawa 67’s and which team below the Wolves in the standings would Sudbury probably want to avoid.
NCAA Campus Report: NCHC Playoffs
The NCHC boasts some of the best teams in all of Division I hockey included the current #1 ranked St. Cloud State Huskies and with the conference’s playoffs beginning this weekend, it’s time to get an update. For that, there is no one better to call on than Brad Elliot Schlossman of the Grand Forks Herald.
We start with the series between arch rival Denver Pioneers and the Fighting Hawks of North Dakota with a look at the key players for each side. Of course the Huskies of St. Cloud State get a lot of attention as they prepare for the Miami RedHawks. Then we discuss the Western Michigan Broncos would will square off with Colorado College.
Lastly, it’s the defending champion Bulldogs from the University of Minnesota-Duluth as they get set for a challenge from Omaha.
2019 Draft Spotlight: Harrison Blaisdell
One of the top ranked Junior ‘A’ players in the Canada ahead of the 2019 NHL Draft is Harrison Blaisdell of the BCHL’s Chilliwack Chiefs. The speedster finished the regular season with 33 goals and 58 points while surrounded by the top team in the league.
Despite his club’s status as the BCHL’s top seed heading into the playoffs, the Chiefs were near-ly bounced in the first round. In fact, they were nearly swept as the upstart Langley Rivermen took the first three games before the Chiefs came back to life.
I spoke with Blaisdell about the comeback in round one, looked ahead to the second round se-ries against Prince George and touched all the bases from the NHL Draft, the World Junior A Challenge and his future at the University of North Dakota.
2019 Draft Spotlight: Matt Boldy
By now most people are in agreement that this year’s edition of the US-NTDP’s U18 squad is one of, if not THE, best ever. This June we’ll see more than half of the roster taken by NHL teams during the Entry Draft and a number of them will go inside the top 20.
One of them will probably be Matthew Boldy.
The 6’2 Massachusetts product is fourth in team scoring with 56 points, 24 of which are goals. Boldy talked about the depth of his squad and who his linemates have been for the most part this season and also the guy he feels he clicks with the most.
I asked Boldy which class of opponent he prefers to play against; the NCAA, the USHL or the other international teams. That led into our discussion about Boston College and why the Eagles was the right fit for him.
Unfortunately, scheduling got in the way and we had to cut the interview a bit shorter than usual but you get a good feel for his personality throughout the conversation.
2019 Draft Spotlight: Brayden Tracey
The Moose Jaw Warriors have one of the most prolific scoring lines in the entire Canadian Hockey League let alone the WHL. 100-point scorers Tristan Langan and Justin Almeida lead the way but 17-year-old rookie Brayden Tracey isn’t just riding on their coat tails.
The Calgary product was the 21st overall pick in the 2016 Bantam Draft but spent an extra sea-son playing Midget AAA in his hometown before making the jump to the WHL this year. That extra time allowed him to play a ton and dominate his competition so he came into the current year with confidence. That said, even Tracey admits that he’s blown way past any statistical goals he set for himself last summer.
I spoke with Tracey about the team and his season as the playoffs draw near. We also dis-cussed his path to Moose Jaw and how much the draft is on his mind. Finally we looked ahead to the post season and an opening round series against the Saskatoon Blade
Guy Flaming is the host of The Pipeline Show, a year round, 100% prospect orientated podcast now in its 14th season.
