Auston Matthews new deal with Toronto Maple Leafs breaks from NHL tradition

Dan Hamilton-USA TODAY Sports
NHL

One of the best explanations of the modern NHL was first sung, on stage, in 1964 by Tevye.

And how do we keep our balance?

That I can tell you in one word... Tradition.

Even if he was technically singing about traditional roles in the village of Anatevka in “Fiddler on The Roof,” Tevye easily could be joined in the chorus by NHL GMs and players. As the world, and other sports leagues change around them, the NHL balance – especially with contracts – has been defined by tradition.

Players strive for long-term security. The best players sign max deals when it comes to term, eight years, and franchises use this to their advantage – Connor McDavid, for example, will be underpaid against his true value by the Edmonton Oilers until 2026.

Tradition. Without our traditions,

Our lives would be as shak
