A lot has happened in hockey over the past fortnight, but I wanted to start by touching on something a little bigger.

Christian Eriksen, the Danish football star, collapsed into cardiac arrest while playing in a UEFA Euro match over the weekend. He was revived in under two minutes because an AED was pitch-side. His captain prevented him from swallowing his tongue and put him in a position that would expedite the process of CPR. While it was an extremely scary sight, the leadership shown by the Danish captain to save his teammate, gather the players to form a privacy wall from cameras and console Eriksen’s wife was tremendous.

But most importantly, it brought the importance of knowing CPR and having access to an AED at sporting facilities to the forefront.

When you learn CPR and First Aid, you hope you never have to use it. But, in the event something happens, you will be thankful that you know how to perform it, because it could save someone’s life. If your neighbourhood sporting facility does not have an AED, advocate for one. Most facilities have one, make sure you know where it is. Take it from me, someone who has performed CPR on a family member: please keep up to date on your CPR training because you just never know what can happen.
