How will Olympic invitations impact NCAA hockey?
The last time the NHL sat out the Olympics, USA Hockey and Hockey Canada largely sought out professional players from Europe and the AHL to fill out their national-team rosters. In all, five players — four representing the States and one from Norway — were plucked from college rosters and called over to PyeongChang.
These absences had muted but clear impacts on the teams that sent their players, even if those players probably all had great experiences and some, like Ryan Donato, burnished their future professional opportunities.
This year, though, USA Hockey at the very least is going in a different direction. It’s more or less all in on college players, inviting 15 players from five different conferences. Presented alphabetically by their school:
