Take Town: Getting closer to the real season

The biggest news of the week is that the New York Islanders re-signed a few of their restricted free agents to eminently reasonable deals. I wish I were making that up. Maybe we're officially getting to the point where it's like, "I wonder who signs P.K. Subban to a tryout contract."

And, hey, someone probably should. I don't think there's anyone on earth, aside from maybe his agent, who would say Subban isn't a shadow of his former self. Injuries caught up to him and all that, it happens to everyone. But he was actually not bad at all on a not-so-good team last season, and any half-decent team with a bit of money to spend (nothing too pricey, now!) should be looking at him as a bottom-half-of-the-lineup option.

Like a lot of veterans who are available at this point in the summer, he's still got something to give, but you gotta figure out the best fit in terms of roster and dollars. Not easy, but probably worth it.
