The Dallas Stars' goaltending situation unnecessarily messy

Most pre-season projections you see for the Dallas Stars come with a bunch of caveats.

They all tend to circle around this idea: "Sure, they were a disappointment last season, missing the playoffs by a few points, but you had to keep in mind that they had a COVID outbreak, missed multiple top players for huge chunks of the season, had to reschedule games due to a once-in-a-lifetime deep freeze, so…"

And all of that is true and I think the Stars are probably a playoff team in the Central if things mostly go their way. I like the coach, I like a good chunk of the forward group and blue line. But then I look at their goaltending and I just straight up don't understand what's going on with any of that.

As it stands right now, they ostensibly have four NHL-calibre goaltenders on the roster:
