Unnumbered Thoughts: The Vegas Golden Knights did it again

The Vegas Golden Knights did it again. 

The defending Stanley Cup champions, who always swing for the fences, swung big on Friday and landed Tomáš Hertl in a last-minute deal. 

This comes two days after they added Noah Hanifin, the top defender on the market.

No one had Hertl moving at the deadline. He had signed an eight-year extension with the San Jose Sharks at the 2022 trade deadline with a cap hit of $8.137 million.

Vegas, living by their “now not later” philosophy, spent big. Sending the Sharks a first-round pick in 2025, a third-round pick in 2025, a third in round in 2027, and David Edstrom, the Golden Knights first-round pick in 2023.

As one NHL scout texted me, “Honestly, should we be surprised?”
