What We Learned: The Edmonton Oilers need help

Perry Nelson/USA TODAY Sports

This was not an unforeseeable set of circumstances.

After dropping Saturday night’s home decision to a rather good (and only somewhat shorthanded) Carolina Hurricanes club, the Edmonton Oilers are now officially losers of five straight, having conceded at least three goals per game and scoring only eight of their own in that stretch.

It will perhaps not surprise you to learn that in these last five games, half of the Oilers’ goals have come directly off the sticks of either Connor McDavid or Leon Draisaitl. But it might surprise you to learn both have hit a bit of a fallow stretch of the season, putting up *only* five and four points, respectively.

Meanwhile, the entire rest of the team has just two goals in the 136:26 when they’re not on the ice. Their opponents have 12 in that same time span.
