SUNRISE, Florida – At least one major trophy was claimed on Tuesday.

While the Stanley Cup itself is still very much up for grabs, with the series shifting back to Edmonton for Game 6, Oilers captain Connor McDavid is going to win the Conn Smythe as NHL playoff MVP.

Sure, ballots haven’t formally been collected yet – contingency ballots are filed in the third period of each potential clinching game – but it’s hard to see anyone other than McDavid winning the award.

McDavid has 42 points in the playoffs, and in the past two games, with his team down 3-0 in the series, the Oilers captain posted back-to-back four-point nights. He’s already broken Wayne Gretzky’s record for assists in a playoff season. McDavid is now eyeing the all-time record for points, which Gretzky set with 47 in 1985.
