THE PIPELINE SHOW: Talking to MJHL Commissioner Kim Davis

It’s been nearly two decades since Kim Davis moved into the role of Commissioner of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. We spoke at length about the 11-team league and what aspects make it unique even among the other nine leagues that make up the CJHL.

We began the interview by looking back at the season that was for the MJHL and what some of the highlights were for the league. The continued domination of the Portage Terriers was an interesting subject — is there a downside to having one team winning 8 titles in 12 seasons?

We spoke about the MJHL/SJHL Showcase and the potential for it to grow bigger and include more leagues. We also touched on the overage quota of 7 players, the 15-year-old draft, the influx of Americans and players from other provinces and more.

I wanted to know about the relationship between the MJHL and the WHL, especially now that the Kootenay Ice have relocated to Winnipeg. Davis gave a detailed answer about the association between the two leagues and how it could be even stronger.

I asked what the MJHL’s policy in the case of hazing in light of an incident back in 2011.

Several fans questions came in for Kim Davis and a number were on the subject of expansion. We spoke about Kenora, Ontario and if that was a market the MJHL would be interested in adding.

Finally, I asked Davis if he has any concerns about the ongoing class-action lawsuit against the CHL and what affect the outcome could have on his league and the rest of amateur sport in Canada. His answer was passionate, to say the least.
