STUART: Where did it all go Wrong for Team USA at the World Juniors

Going into this year’s World Junior Hockey Championship’s, Team USA’s roster garnered consideration as a threat to take home the gold medal. Instead, the Finns knocked them out in a quarterfinal rematch of last year’s gold medal game to the tune of a 1-0 score.

So, what happened?

Unfortunately, a lot of stuff, and not much of it good. Let’s break these items down, with some constructive criticism along the way, because it’s never just one thing.

Deployment — Look At This Ice Time. Look At It.

Trevor Zegras — he of the nine primary assists in this tournament — played, on average, 13:46 per game. It’s fair to say that he was barely used in the first handful of games, and his ice time went up after that. In game one, he started on the fourth line with Jacob Pivonka and Curtis Hall.
