Storväxt back med rötterna i anrika Tingsryds AIF. Debuterade i den småländska klubbens a-lag säsongen 1976/77 i division 1.
Handplockades av Leksandstränaren Lennart Åhlberg till masklubben 1983. Det blev bara två säsonger där innan NHL-scouterna upptäckte hans storhet och smått gigantiska räckvidd i rinken som då tog honom över till New York Rangers. Efter fjorton säsonger med NYR, Philadelphia Flyers, Pittsburgh Penguins och Tampa Bay Lightning så lade "Big-Kjell" skridskorna på hylla 1999 och inledde en karriär som coach i USA.

VM-spelare och världsmästare 1991 i Åbo. Ett VM där han tillhörde en av Tre Kronors absolut bästa backar tillsammans med en ung Nicklas Lidström.
