Excelled in high school hockey, where as a junior, Ian led the Mountain Mustangs to their first ever Manitoba High School Championship, and was named the top goaltender at the high school level. As a high school senior Ian joined the Pembina Valley Hawks (MMHL). With Pembina, he broke Manitoba records for shutouts in a single season and lowest Goals Against Average. Throughout High School Ian was also an active member on the Baseball, Basketball, Volleyball, and Badminton teams. After his successes in high school athletics, Ian joined the Winkler Flyers of the MJHL, where he took part in the MJHL All-Star games, and represented Manitoba at the World Challenge Viking Cup in Camrose Alberta.
Graduated from the University of Manitoba in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology, and during his studies served as was an assistant strength and conditioning coach for the Canadian Football League’s Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
During his MJHL career, he earned a scholarship to play NCAA Div I hockey for the Iona College Gaels. In his freshman season he broke records for having the lowest goals against in team history, along with shattering the team record for the longest shut out streak.
