The Kitchener, Ontario, Canada native Bernard Hutz joined EC Salzburg in 1979 as the club was searching for Canadian hockey players with Austrian roots, who were not classified as import players under the league's rules. Consequently, the defender played ten seasons in the Austrian league, scoring 244 points (93 goals, 151 assists) in 364 matches. Hutz even made it to the Austrian national team, which he represented in 71 international matches (6 goals, 15 assists) including two Olympics.
