Best known as a refiree, after his hockey career ended at age 19 after a serious eye injury, after being hit by a puck, left him blind in one eye (but never told anyone he was blind during his reffing career). Started as a ref in the Eastern League in 1937, and moved on to the NHL in 1939 serving until 1955. Invented many hand signals for referees still used today. Also served as a radio commentator from 1965-85 , where he was given his nickname "the Big Whistle". Retired to private life in 1987

Passed away, while in hospice care, on October 24, 2009 at the age of 94.
