Kevin MacLean and Roger Sturgeon were business partners and owners of Transcription Enterprises, a software company that specialized in semiconductor design processes. They were awarded an IHL expansion franchise, the Minnesota Moose, on December 16, 1993.

MacLean, the majority owner of the Moose, sold half of the franchise to a group consisting of Mark Chipman, Jeff Thompson, Syd Thompson and Thomas Steen, following a relocation agreement that was approved by the IHL on December 7, 1995.

He sold his remaining 50% stake in the franchise to Mark Chipman and Crocus Investment Fund on May 15, 2001.
