Sign up for premiumFrederick Arthur Stanley, the 16th Earl of Derby, better known as Lord Stanley of Preston took interest in hockey after being appointed as Governor General of Canada. He donated a rose bowl, the Stanley Cup, to be awarded to the amateur champions of Canada. The winner of the cup was originally awarded to a winner of a challenge game. The cup became the official championship trophy of the National Hockey League in 1947. Lord Stanley, 67, died on June 14, 1908, in Kent, England. He was posthumously inducted to the Hockey Hall of Fame in the Builder category in 1945.
