Frank Sellick Calder was the secretary-treasurer of the National Hockey Association (NHA) from 1914 to 1917 and the president from 1917 to 1920. He was elected the first president of the National Hockey League (NHL) in 1917 and remained in that position until his fatal heart attack on January 25, 1943. He was posthumously inducted to the Hockey Hall of Fame in the Builder category in 1947. The best rookie award of the National Hockey League and the American Hockey League championship trophy are named after.
