Keith Decker, a businessman from Wisconsin, headed a group of local investors that was awarded a UHL franchise, the Madison Kodiaks. He bought out the other owners and relocated the franchise from Madison, Wisconsin, to Kamalazoo, Michigan, in the following summer.
This move saw the Kalamazoo Wings move from the IHL to the UHL. The original Wings' owners, Martha and Ted Parfet, licensed the team name and the logo to Decker. He sold the franchise to Parfets after two seasons.
