Henry Grooms, a boxing manager and a promoter, sought to build an arena in Kalamazoo, Michigan. To fill in the rest of the dates with hockey, he teamed with Jim Gilmore, Alan Huellmantel, Martha Parfet and Ted Parfet and acquired an IHL expansion franchise, which became known as the Kalamazoo Wings.
