Elite Prospects Notes and Trivia
History
Järveds IF was formed in 1938. To begin with, the club pursued boxing just like its predecessor, Järveds Allmänna Idrottsklubb, which was wound up in the twenties. JIF did not begin to play ice hockey until 1944. The first ice hockey rink was built near the debarking drum on the shore of Örnsköldsviksfjärden. The rink was moved to its present site in 1945. The oldest part of the clubhouse was erected in 1957 and the extension during the 1983-84 season.
In the club’s heyday, the A team played in the first division for six seasons altogether and, the rest of the time, mostly in the second division. JIF’s A team played for the club up until the 1984-85 season when the team became part of Ö-vik Hockey, which itself ceased to exist in 1994-95.
JIF has produced many successful players over the years. Several really skilled players have started their careers in the club. The latest are the NHL professionals Marcus Näslund, Hans Jonsson and Henrik and Daniel Sedin, to name but a few.
With the introduction of the competition, “TV- pucken”, JIF’s work with youngsters really began to grow. The club has provided many skilled players for the Ångermanland team.
Our work with young people is central to the club’s activities. Since 2000 we have also extended our activities to include floorball for both girls and boys. At present, around 190 youngsters take part in activities run by the club. The youngest join our skating school and the oldest are members of the A team.
Ice hockey is mainly played at our own rink, Getinghov, and at other local authority facilities, principally the indoor and outdoor rinks at Skyttis. In the long term, our ambition is to be able to provide ice hockey for girls as well.
Floorball is mostly played in local authority sports halls. Our long-term ambition is to be able to play league floorball in the gym at Alneskolan but there are no sideboards at present.
In the no. 1 issue of the Swedish Ice Hockey Association’s magazine “Hockey”, you can read that Järveds IF is “The best club for youngsters in the world”, as far as the sporting achievements of our young people are concerned. Our next goal is to receive the same credit for the way in which we set a good example socially. “Järveds IF – the friendliest club for youngsters in the world.”
