What We Learned: Toronto's goaltending gamble going sideways already

I don't mean to pile on here, but there are just some truths about the Toronto Maple Leafs' goaltending situation that are now all too apparent.

The downside was obvious. The upside not so much.

The Leafs, in a make-or-break season for the general manager, the coach, and maybe even the core, pushed all-in on a goaltending tandem comprised of two cast-offs from teams that, just a year ago, finished lower than them in the standings.

Trading within the division to acquire Matt Murray was always going to be a gamble, but the bet on the part of a brain trust steeped in the Soo Milieu was that the former Greyhound would be a hell of a lot more like the player he was after returning from injury midway through last season. The breakdown is clear: Once Murray returned from a neck injury among other is
