Basketball franchise Charlotte Hornets owners George Shinn and Ray Wooldridge bought the Charlotte Checkers from Tim Braswell on June 1, 2000. They sold the ECHL franchise to Steve Luquire, Mark Richardson, Félix Sabates, Carl Scheer and Jerry Zucker on May 23, 2002.
Before selling the Checkers, Shinn bought the Birmingham Bulls from David Berkman, Bruce Burge and Charles Felix on May 14, 2001. Following the relocation to Atlantic City, New Jersey, the team did well on ice, but struggled off the ice. He sold the franchise to Michael Reinsdorf on January 31, 2005.
