Biography
Ed Chynoweth served as the President of the Western Hockey League (also known as the Western Canada Hockey League until 1978) from 1972 to 1979 and from 1980 to 1995 and as the President of the Canadian Hockey League from 1975 to 1995. He was instrumental in the formation of the CHL which joined the three major junior leagues of Canada. He resigned from his posts first in 1979 to manage the Calgary Wranglers, and then in 1995 to help form the expansion Edmonton Ice (later Kootenay Ice). He remained president and the governor of the Edmonton/Kootenay franchise, as well as the chairman of the board of the the WHL until his death in 2008. He died of kidney cancer in Calgary at the age of 66.
Chynoweth was as elected to the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame in 2000, and in 2007, the WHL honored him by renaming its championship trophy to bear his name. Incidentally the Ed Chynoweth Trophy, awarded to the top scorer at the Memorial Cup tournament, is also named after him. He also served as a member of the selection committee at the Hockey Hall of Fame; and was posthumously inducted as a builder into the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto on November 10, 2008.
