Clarence Sutherland Campbell, a former referee, started working with NHL President Frank Calder. In 1946, after serving with Canadian Army in WWII, he became the new president and held that position until 1977. During his tenure he planned the first expansion, bringing the league from 6 to 12 franchises in 1967. Campbell was inducted to the Hockey Hall of Fame in the Builder category in 1966 and he passed away on June 24, 1984.
